Colour says it all

You may think that your logo is rolling out the red carpet but your customers may see red on account of it. This nonsensical statement, most assuredly has a point. The point is, people associate meanings with color, thus the penchant of people to use colors in idiomatic expressions.

The fact that people react to colors, and do so without prior thought or rationalization is something that people in design should think about. In particular, if you are designing a logo for your company, you'd do well to heed human color psychology and design your logo accordingly. Here are some colors that almost always make their way into logo designs. Knowing their meaning will help you use each color properly and accordingly.

Color-full Reactions


If people are able to see energy, they'd probably see red (pun intended). Red is the color associated with activity, passion, romance, and adventure. This color is the eternal call to action. In logo design, you'd do very well to use this color if you are offering something exciting and something new to your consumers. It has also been proven effective for selling food and food supplements.


Another popular logo design color, yellow is associated with feelings of happiness and good cheer. This color suits the inquisitive and the playful. If you are perhaps into entertainment and amusement and intellectual stimulation, yellow is a good logo design color choice.


The color of calm skies is the color that people associate with serenity and tranquility. It gives off the feeling of distance and of perspective. The color blue gives the person looking at it great reassurance. If you use blue in your logo design, your logo will communicate power and assurance. If your company deals in electronics and other gadgetry, it is a good idea to use blue. Blue offers the bonus of being the world's least disliked color.


Black is generally associated with death and misery. It is also symbolic of mysterious, exclusive and traditional things. Use black sparingly in your logo design. Use it for accents, not as the main color scheme. A little black here and there may give people the impression of stability and convention.


The color of royalty, magic and wonder, this is purple. Children are inexorably drawn to the color purple. It brings to mind the days of kings and queens, of lords and ladies, of princes and princesses. This is the color to use if your target consumers are children.


Brown always evokes thoughts of nature and mother earth. Even if you are designing a logo for an environmentally focused company though, using only browns without complementing colors would make your logo design look washed out.


This color brings youthful vitality to mind. Some people associate it with cheap and mundane things. Logo designers can use orange if the brand is targeted towards young people.
